Jeff Fogle penned a recent column here on Substack that I can support from the most granular neurotransmitter model to the most macro human behavior framework—with a dozen behavioral science pit stops in between: the betting world desperately needs real community.
Not a leaderboard. Not a Discord. Not a thread of hot picks and cold takes.
A true, sticky, culture-driven, value-producing community—built for bettors, by bettors, with space for identity, learning, and language. And I’m still baffled as to why none of the legal sportsbooks have stepped up to host or sponsor one.
We have community-first platforms for gamers. For investors. For hobbyists. But for sports wagering, horse racing, or even niche prop bettors? Nothing coherent. And yet, we all know what a group chat full of bettors feels like—electric, tribal, hilarious, and often, smarter than the experts on TV. So why hasn’t that been given structure?
Last year, I built a mini version of this myself. For six months, I ran a small betting community—not for profit, but for proof of concept. I gave everyone their voice and let them compete for fun. Contests ranged from “plus-money plays” to “best ROI.” Winners got things like hockey Jerseys, custom-made Richmond Spiders hats and even shirts with phrases the community invented themselves—words like Parlay-amorous. These weren’t just contests. They were rituals. Identity-forming. People watched even if they didn’t play. Everyone learned. And somehow, without ever forcing the issue, we taught responsible betting behavior in the process.
People led by example. Players who tilted one week got checked—by the culture, not by enforcement. It worked better than any “know your limits” popup ever could.
So here’s my preliminary proposal. I haven’t thought this out for days so please drive whatever truck you can through the holes in it and make it better. Who knows - maybe we will end up building The Betting Collective.
The Betting Collective:
A Next-Generation Community Platform for Sports Wagering Culture
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Betting Collective reimagines sports wagering communities by focusing on culture rather than transactions. This platform blends Reddit's community dynamics, Barstool's cultural resonance, and Bloomberg Terminal's analytical power to create a self-regulating ecosystem where members build identity, develop expertise, and form meaningful connections through their shared passion for sports betting.
CORE VALUE PROPOSITION
1. AI-Powered Collective Intelligence
"Ask the Collective" - Interactive Data Engine
Conversational sports intelligence that responds to complex, contextual queries with instant, data-driven insights
Examples: "Has Judge homered off Sale after the 6th inning in games where Yankees were underdogs?" or "Show me how the Celtics spread moved in their last five Tuesday games where Tatum was questionable"
Leverages machine learning to combine historical data, live odds, and community betting patterns for predictive insights
Democratizes advanced betting analytics that were previously available only to professionals
Knowledge Moat
Proprietary algorithm combines public sports data with exclusive betting pattern analysis
Trains on anonymized community betting history to identify winning angles and market inefficiencies
Creates flywheel effect: better data → smarter community → more data → better platform
2. Cultural Identity Ecosystem
Linguistic Evolution & Community Signaling
Members develop insider terminology that signals belonging and expertise IRL examples from the past: "Parlay-amorous" (someone who can't resist parlays despite poor value), "Teasermonger" (expert at finding profitable teaser opportunities), "Over-underwhelmed" (when totals start hot then cool off)
Platform highlights and celebrates new memes, terminology and cultural touchpoints
Creates persistent community lexicon that evolves with betting trends and seasons leading to self curation of unwanted behaviors
Status Economy
Reputation built on insight quality, discipline metrics, and community contributions—not betting volume
Achievement system rewards sustained edge, responsible practices, and cultural contributions
Limited-edition physical merchandise for significant community contributions (coining viral terms, exceptional analysis)
Invitation-only experiences for top contributors (pro sports events, expert sessions, industry access)
3. Micro-Community Architecture
"Bet Tribes" & "Angle Crews"
Small, focused groups (led by 8-15 members) who share specialized knowledge and betting approaches, examples: "The Sharp Six" (focused online movement analysis), "The Narrative Faders" (specialize in betting against public sentiment), "Props Battalion" (player prop specialists)
Each tribe develops unique methodologies, rituals, and tracking systems
Inter-tribe competitions with custom metrics (CLV delta, ROI variance, win streaks)
Community Governance
Decentralized moderation system where high-reputation members shape community standards
Algorithmic content surfacing based on quality, originality, and community response
Merit-based advancement through contribution tiers (Rookie → Regular → Respected → Renowned)
Ensures authenticity remains central as the platform scales
4. Gamified Learning Ecosystem
Non-Monetary Competitions
Fantasy-style contests based on betting principles without requiring actual wagers, examples: "Plus Money Playoffs," "Market Mover Challenge," "The Discipline Derby"
Skills development through competition, mentorship, and structured challenges
Clear progression path from novice to expert through tiered competitions
Spectator Economy
"Watch and Learn" mode for following expert bettors' thought processes in real-time
Interactive Q&A sessions with successful community members
Educational content that demystifies advanced concepts through community insights
Creates pathways for beginners to develop confidence before placing real bets

The community last year was a great group of people for the most part. I still stay in contact with many and we all support each other in a myriad of ways. I am all for seeing something like this generate.
